Chapter Five

The next morning Savannah had just enough time to slip on a pair of sweatpants, slippers, and to push her arms into a jacket she zipped over her nightshirt before heading down the stairs with Micah in tow. “I sure hope you learn that I’m not a morning person at some point.” Grumbling those words, she grabbed the leash from the spot on the kitchen floor where she’d left it last night and moved toward the back door.

Micah danced around happily even when she leaned in to snap the leash to his collar. “Silly dog. How on earth do you have this much energy so early in the morning?”

The dog’s response was a toothy grin just as she stood to open the door. “You’re not fun—” The word died in her throat only to be replaced by a strangled scream.

“Mornin’. Whoa, wait I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you,” Luke immediately said. He was holding two mugs and took a hurried step back from the screened door. “I was just getting ready to knock because I know Micah’s an early riser.”

She’d slapped a hand to her chest in an effort to keep her rapidly pounding heart from jumping out. “And apparently you are too.” She shook her head and pushed the screened door open. “You two are a perfect match.”

Luke chuckled as Micah tugged on the leash trying to get outside with him. She stepped outside and pulled the door closed behind her.

“Dogs get used to routines,” he started and then after closing the screened door, came up beside her to offer her a mug. “They’re a lot like humans in that regard.”

She peeped over the rim of the mug to see it was hot chocolate with marshmallows floating on top. “Well, this human isn’t normally an early riser. Did you make this yourself?” They were walking down the back steps now.

“Yes, with one of those packets that come in a red box from Godfrey’s Market. And you must’ve been getting up early with Micah for a while now because he’s convinced this is the time to get up and go out.”

Frowning, she took a sip from the mug before shooting a wary look at Luke. “This dog has a mind of his own.” Case in point, he was struggling to pull her in another direction, yanking on the leash that she’d already given full slack. “This isn’t half bad. I only just got used to homemade hot chocolate since being back in Sweetland. When I was out in the world instant packs were all I kept in my kitchen.” But she’d always had hot chocolate because Gramma had used it as a remedy for every ailment they had growing up, whether medicinal or emotional.

“Here, let me take him.” She didn’t argue and easily released the leash to Luke. His hand brushed over hers with the exchange and she eased it back slowly, pushing it into her jacket pocket.

It had happened again, that jolt of awareness she’d felt
